Robbs farm was started in 1955 by my father, Floyd Robbs. He and Rose Mary moved here from the panhandle of Texas to start farming in the Kansas Settlement area south of Willcox. He chose this area because many of his friends had moved recently to start farming and they had told him that this area had a good climate, shallow water, and good soil. The crop he planted then was milo grain sorghum. He had to clear the land and drill many wells to add to the farm. In the late 50’s and early 60’s he started planting iceberg lettuce. There was a spring crop and then a fall crop each year. He also started planting cotton and got the cotton gin in our area going. His brother runs the gin now and it is the only gin in Cochise County.
I, Alan Robbs, was born in 1956 and grew up working on the farm. We had a house in town and drove 11 miles to the farm to work. After graduation from high school I moved to Bakersfield, California. I graduated from Cal State Bakersfield in 1980 with a bachelors in ag-business and after Kathy and I were married we lived there until 1990. At that time we moved back to the farm and we formed Robbs Farm Partnership.
During the 90’s we started branching out into other crops. We put in a pistachio orchard and a pecan orchard. We also started to grow sweet yellow onions that we harvested in the summer. We stopped growing milo maize and started growing more cotton because it was less water intensive. We stopped growing iceberg lettuce and increased our onion acreage. Now we also grow pumpkins, peppers, and watermelon.
*Update May 2019 - Some changes have taken place since previous writing: Our farm had some downsizing...currently down to 40 acres of pistachios. On our home property across the street (5 acres) we have a small greenhouse, a high tunnel, and several areas designated to growing our organic fruits and veggies.
